Weddings are full of traditions that add to the occasion and to the feeling of ceremony of the whole event. Naturally, those who choose to have a religious ceremony before the wedding reception will have even more traditions attached to their wedding, and weddings in cultured outside the west will probably have totally different traditions. Also, different countries, even in the west, have either small differences in their traditions and add some traditions of their own. These are simply the most well known ones.
After the wedding ceremony it’s customary that unmarried wedding guests form into two groups, men and women, and the bride then throws the bouquet at the women and the garter at the men (it’s said that wedding garters keep garters from going into obscurity. The guests that manage to catch the bouquet or the garter are said to be the ones getting married next. On the subject of throwing, rice is thrown at the newlyweds to symbolize abundance and the “planting of the seed” of a new family.
Cutting the cake is something that the bride and groom do together, as a sign that they’re on the same page. It also symbolizes the first act that they perform together as a couple. Similarly, when they offer each other a bite of cake, it symbolized that they’ll care for each other.
